A to Z of Blogging: G - Goals

Blogging has become almost as common today as having a Facebook account. More and more people are starting their blogs. And they all have so many varied reasons for doing so.

I started blogging merely to satisfy my curiosity. I just wanted to know what blogging really was. I had no specific goals to achieve through blogging. So I just allowed this blog to take its own course. I still keep experimenting here – with the design, as well as with the content.

Having specific goals from blogging is better though. It helps one remain consistent and focused.

So what are some of the most common goals people have from blogging?

Blogging Goals

  • Documenting Our Life.
Some bloggers just want to journal their life for their family and friends. They share personal stories, photos, maybe even videos. They share their thoughts and feelings on their blogs. Blogging is a great way to let people know what’s going on in your life.

  • Marketing/Promotion.
Be it baking classes or photography workshops or handmade table mats and rugs, blogs provide an inexpensive and effective medium to promote and market your products/services online.

  • Networking.
Blogging is an activity that helps connect like-minded people with each other. So if you’re keen on making new friends, blogging can give you a great platform for meeting and interacting with people who share your interests.

  • Sharing Information.
If you want a platform to share your knowledge with others, on a subject you are passionate about, blogging can be your means to “give back to the society”. There are health-related blogs, inspirational blogs, recipe blogs, and travel blogs. There are blogs on entrepreneurship, on social-issues, on finance, and yes, on blogging too!

  • Creative Outlet.
If you have a latent creative talent—be it in writing or in photography, or in sketching, or art, or making paper crafts, anything really—blogging can help you explore that talent, and grow it, with the help of encouraging feedback from other bloggers.

  • Making Money.
More and more bloggers today are creating blogs for making money out of them in various ways. While some are earning a little bit of extra income on the side, through their blogs, other professional bloggers are making a full living via blogging. We’ll cover this topic in detail under “M - Monetization”.

Different people have different goals from blogging. I started blogging here on a whim, but, since then, I have used it for making friends, for learning new skills, for sorting through my thoughts and feelings, and for remaining sane through some really difficult times!

What are your goals from blogging? Did you start blogging with a specific intention in mind? Or did you just “jump in” like me, to have some fun and see where it took you? Have your blogging goals evolved over time?

Getaway from real world too :P

I had no specific goal in mind when I decided to blog. I started blogging mainly as a form of self expression, as writing has always been the best way for me to sort through my thoughts and ideas. However, once I started, I made some great friends and fell in love with the sense of community among bloggers. These people are now a big part of the reason I continue to blog. :)

When I started I didn't have any blogging goals. Now...well, not so much but would love to make some money if possible

Shilpa, I was also thinking that maybe it's high time I should focus on a goal now. But it seemed like too much work just deciding on what that goal might be. So I gave up!

Sanch, oh yeah! Money is always good! The more the merrier! :P
