Array of Mailboxes: Photo A Day - Mailbox

Day 16 of "May Photo A Day Challenge" : Mailbox

Today's topic did not make an interesting prompt for us Indians at least. Very few (if any) of us have those fancy mailboxes that we see in Hollywood movies and Google images.

I remember when I used to live in a house in Kanpur, the local postman delivered all our mail personally. The envelopes were usually slid under the door, but on every festival, he would ring the bell, deliver the mail in our hand, and then demand his 'baksheesh' (unofficial festival bonus)!

Then we started living in apartment units. And since then, all our regular mail is delivered to the building's security (usually the guard room at the main gate), while registered posts and couriers are delivered in person, directly to the recipient.

So, while we have these arrays of mailboxes set up in our building here, they are hardly used by anyone. I suppose that's already obvious from the condition of the mailboxes. Most of them have their locks broken. Some don't even remain closed anymore!

This is my 16th post for 2013 May Photo A Day Challenge.

They are old but the red color is making them look all bright and ready to receive mails! And yes, the postman nailed it! Ours do the same! :-)

@Meena - It is? I wonder why we even have these things in apartments then, if nobody's gonna use them! :-/

Chicky a.k.a. Kaddu said...

@Naina - Do you have a fixed postman for your neighborhood? I remember the same guy used to come to our place in Kanpur every time to collect 'baksheesh'! :P

Wow! At least your building has them still, though not used... I checked with one of the security guards last evening and he cribbed 'there isn't any mailbox and that is why we have to home deliver the mails to you'! :D

Chicky a.k.a. Kaddu said...

@Shilpa - Hahaha! Tell him he would have had to home deliver the mails even if there were any mailboxes... that's how it is in the other societies in Jaipur! :D :D

In my aptt we get all sorts of fliers wanted and unwanted. :(

Chicky a.k.a. Kaddu said...

Pallavi, we get those fliers in our newspapers, tucked inside the sheets.

Our postman was like a neighbour who didn't live in the neighbourhood. He'd visit our shop every month and sit and chat a-while with my parents and the staff, who were only too happy to have me, an exasperatingly talkative boy, off their back for a few minutes as postman uncle sat me on his knee and told me mad tales of how his grandfather (also a postman, obviously!) would deliver letters to the ghost of a princess in a haunted haveli in his native Almora. He rarely had any actual mail :-)

Have you ever had a pen friend, I wonder?

All said and done it looks so vibrant!!!

Chicky a.k.a. Kaddu said...

Yes OB, I've had pen friends. Though email pen friends! :P In fact, you were also a pen friend until a few months ago.
