Live Life: Remember to Have Fun

A lot of people have asked me why so many of us spend time on FarmVille! The reason is very simple:

All work and no play makes everyone a dull person, and not just Jack!

People play FarmVille because they like participating in fun activities. Life doesn’t mean just work for them. (14 hours per day 6 days a week isn’t really work though; it’s more of slave labor, if you ask me!) And FarmVille offers them their kind of fun.

Actually, the choice of fun activities is a very individual thing. Different people do different things for having fun. Some play cricket/football with their friends in the neighborhood. For some, the idea of fun simply means to drown themselves in alcohol every Saturday night! Yet others have pets to turn to for their fun time.

A lot of Indian housewives join “kitty parties”. In some such “kitty” groups, they actually go to the extent of organizing different fun games every time, but for most, the term just stands for “playing cards”. Whatever it is, the point is that it is THEIR idea of fun time.

Men are usually just happy watching a good game on TV. And then some people are die-hard movie buffs, and their biggest passion in life is watching every movie within its first week of release, if not the very first day!

Personally, I would just love to play badminton on a daily basis, if only I could find a playmate! But until I get so fortunate, I make do with computer games. Here are my personal top 5 online games that help me “chill out”:

  • FarmVille.

I like this game purely for its artistic and social interaction aspect. Apart from that, there is hardly any value in the game – no analytical skills, very basic math skills, no hard-core reasoning or memory – in short, the game provides no food at all for the left brain!

  • Biggest Brain Game.

A not-so-popular game now, on Facebook. But I was crazy about it once! In fact, I still play it occasionally. This game tests you in four different areas – analytical, numeric, memory and visualization. And with regular practice, I actually found that my mental abilities in those areas had developed considerably, especially in quick mental math and memory.

  • Mahjong.

Aah! One of my big-time favorites, though not many of my friends are able to understand this game! There are different varieties of this game on different sites. It’s available in 3D as well as 2D format. In fact, I found a google widget for the 2D version, and added it in my blog too! This game primarily tests your visual skills, combined with strategic planning. Kind of like “Solitaire”, but tougher. The biggest drawback is that it can be a bit of strain on the eyes if you play it for long stretches!

  • PuzzleBee Jigsaw Puzzles.

Another one of my “old flames” on Facebook! I was as crazy about this one as I was about the Biggest Brain Game! In those days, it used to be completely free, and I completed at least 3-4 puzzles every day, if not more! It was absolutely great for improving memory and concentration. My average in the “Memory” section of the Biggest Brain Game increased a lot after I started doing these jigsaw puzzles regularly.

  • Sudoku.

A brilliant way to start your day! A Sudoku a day keeps the “nuts-and-bolts” in my left-brain well-greased and oiled at all times. Excellent for building quick analytical abilities! I found a google widget for this game too, to add in my blog.

Apart from these online games, I also indulge myself with good music, and sing along at the top of my voice, pretending to be a rock star! I paint occasionally; do embroidery, or some other such creative activity.

It really doesn’t matter what your definition of “fun” is, but quality fun time is essential to unwind and relax, and to keep going in life, through its various highs and lows.

Not only that, but you can also acquire some new skills, or sharpen your existing skills, while having fun.

So then, what are your top 5 fun activities?

How do you indulge the “little kid” in you?
