Memorabilia-V: The *Man* Smell

A smell...

... with which I grew up...

... & which never fails to turn me on!...

My Dad used this for as long as I can remember. I say "used" because he stopped using this when we left Kanpur... don't know why though.

I loved this smell so much that, every now and then, I used to pick up this bottle from the shelf in the bathroom (where Dad kept it)... bring its nozzle close to my nose... and ummmmmm... smell it!

Strangely, I don't see any guys of my generation (or the ones after me) using this particular after-shave now! I wonder why! :-/

. . . . .

Here's more in Memorabilia!

Do you remember the old TV ad on DD? :)

I too, never considered using it till recently when my little sister declared that her dada has to wear Old Spice, if anything!

Mahesh:
Cool! Seems like the "dudes" of our parents' generation were more of "studs"! ;-) :-D :-p

Kaddu said...

@ AB: Hey thanks buddy! I really wanted to have another look at this ad from a long time! Think the track is Enigma ???
Btw, your sister sure as hell loves u a lot! :-D

Shreesh said...

I have used aleast 2 bottles of it

Kaddu said...

Shreesh:
Hmmm! I didn't know that! Did u use it like a long time ago? And why did u change to some other aftershave then?

The smell of tis after shave has changed a bit over the years, the original one was absolutely amazing, it had a multitude of spices & a lovely background of dry woody smells. the top note was fresh & lively with a lot of lime , lemon bergamot oils. over the years some of the oils in the original became too costly & were replaced by synthetic molecules hence the perfume lost it's depth & charm ,

Hmmmpphhhh! I shud hv known what to expect from a perfumer! Poori history-geography bata daali! :))

Nice reading Akki's comment. I've been reading about perfumes and what goes into them for a few weeks. You know, my mum always commented that all men's perfumes/deos remind her of cigarettes, and I recently learned that tobacco leaves are often a part of the concoction that goes into making these fragrances!

AB:
Oh nooooo! Not TWO perfumers! [Yahoo smiley for pulling hair!]

I thought the sound was by Enigma too, till I realized that ad is from 1977 while Enigma did not happen till 1990!
Modern Crusaders is the name of the Enigma number we're talking about here. Its one of my favourites. Love it for its raw power! [and the fact that when I first heard it, it reminded me of somehting from my childhood that I could not quite pinpoint, before it struck me one day as the tune from the old aftershave advert :)]

Here's a part of the lines, with translations for those parts:

est affectus
et defectus
semper in angaria.
(drive on
and weighted down,
always enslaved.)

quod per sortem
sternit fortem,
mecum omnes plangite!
(since Fate
strikes down the strong man,
everyone weep with me!)

nunc obdurat
et tunc curat
ludo mentis aciem,
egestatem,
potestatem
(first oppresses
and then soothes
as fancy takes it;
poverty,
power)

Stand up, join us, modern crusaders alive
We have the power who'll face the future
Cause we are the fighters
Just fighting for our fights

Stand up, join us, modern crusaders alive!

From 'O Fortuna', a poem from Carmina Burana, a collection of Latin poems written in early 13th century [wiki].

Loved 'researching' this :)

Kaddu said...

Oh boy! That was some... "RESEARCH"! Wow! Apne takkar ka koi insaan kafi saalon baad mila hai! :-D

Now do some more research n find the track played in that ad... n send a download link for it to me! :-D

Abhiroop Banerjee said...

But surely you already have the Enigma track right, Pumpkin?

And anyway, nothing doing till you teach me how to win this blasted colorjunction :D

Kaddu said...

I have the Enigma track alrite, but u said the track in the Ad was not Enigma 'coz it came much before Enigma's arrival. I want the track in the AD.

Win CJ? Not easy dude! I managed to do it only once or twice I think... & I hv no clue how I did it! It wasn't any planned strategy u know. Besides, I haven't played these games here in a long long time now. So I'm completely rusty!

Abhiroop Banerjee said...

Did you know? Dolly the cloned sheep and Old spice are related.

Kaddu said...

Dolly what? I'm completely lost!

Thanks for the track btw! That was quick! :-D I had heard tht IT ppl were a "vella" lot in general... looks like I'd heard right! ;-) :-D

Abhiroop Banerjee said...

1. Dolly
2. Dolly's relation to Old Spice

Warning: Serious bakwaas.

(result of aforementioned vellapanti)

Kaddu said...

Ufffffff!

chronicleofmylife said...

i read somewhere that the old spice had to be smuggled from outside in those days. it was not available in india. so u see our parents took so much risk to look stylish.

Kaddu said...

Rahi:
Oh is that so? Hmmm... I didn't know abt the smuggling bit... but yeah, our parents did a lot to look stylish! Those Shammi-Kapoor style flicks & this other hero who sorta puffed-up his hair in a weird way... "lakhon hain nigaah mein" waala I think... Joy or something... not sure abt his name!

And u know what... my dad & his brothers & close friends used to bunk college & go all the way to Banaras to watch "first day first shows" of Hindi movies, 'coz they released them a day before (on Thursday) in Banaras, whereas here in Patna, movies were released on Friday!

nishitak said...

Maybe guys of this generation use Axe :D

Kaddu said...

nishitak:
No wonder they have to try harder to please a girl these days! Now if they'd still been using the Old Spice... wink! wink!
